NORTHERN (DE)LIGHTS

All photography by Pasi Aalto.

Growing wider from the ground-floor, this protruding residence in Norway uses a parallelepiped structure to provide both spacious upper-floor interior and ample garden space on ground level.

TYIN Tegnestue Architects created this top-heavy extension to an existing property in the province of Trondheim – an area of more traditional, though colourful, architecture.

The result is a spacious second-floor living area, from where the high ceilings open into a third-floor mezzanine level.

The use of simple glass and plain Norwegian birch for the interior provides a neutral canvas for the resident to decorate with their own concept of interior design.

The exterior is made of pine, giving the extension a modern though natural look – a middle-ground of sorts in a conservative and traditional neighbourhood.
