In the heart of De Wieden National Park, Netherlands, a decommissioned water tower has been repurposed by Zecc Architects into a creative landmark.

The tower’s purposefully bleak concrete interior has been warmed by two charming wooden staircases. Completed by a third steel set, the public are led to to a viewing level 45 metres high, where they find a 360 degree view of the protected area in Overijssel province.

While the old industrial staircase remains circling the interior wall, the new wooden structure zigzags playfully up the centre of the tower, giving new perspective and depth.

“You feel feeble as a visitor and you get an impression of the huge quantity of water that used to provide water pressure for the entire region,” the design team explained.

Repurposing the tower had many challenges, not least of all the sensitivity of working with a protected building.

They concluded: “the strength of this plan lies in a combination of extreme restraint on the exterior and an architectural statement on the inside of the tower.
